I’ve often wondered as I’ve used these elevators two puzzlements on people and elevator etiquette, if there is such a thing.  Here they are:

1.. When the doors open, why do the people waiting to board have to rush the elevator?  Are these people new?  Do they not understand that chances are very good that in a large office building there would be people needing to exit the elevator before others waiting can enter?  Are they afraid this elevator will leave without them?  I just don’t get it.

2.. While in the elevator and you reach the ground floor (or any other floor where yourself and your co-passenger will be exiting) and you politley tell them “After you!” and extend your arm, showing them the door – why is it that some people respond with “After you!” — is it necessary that we be SO polite as to refuse an offered gesture of politeness – wait, wouldn’t that mean that Person B who did not accept the gesture is not actually being polite after all?  Hmmm…
